Duality of Purpose

A chubby persona of tatooed life creases,  and salty pepper, sensibly cropped hair,  Miss Fig signed a truce with her reflection  and only Annie keeps her from feeling content. If you are unacquainted with the slender girl of silky rose cheeks and long, center-parted,   tresses, dark as her eyes,  you might doubt that Annie is part of Miss Fig's once upon a time. "Why don't you go away?" Miss Fig sniffled on a hot toddy evening when she only wanted to drift off in her queen-sized bed. But Annie remained cross- legged on the hope chest Miss Fig uses for storage. "No, I won't give up on you, not even tonight when you're runny nose pathetic.  Cold or no cold, I can't get over what you have become. Why did you get fat and frumpy?  I had such hopes, What happened?" "Years happened and comfort  sought in home-alone snacks.  I don't remember when we went our separate ways." "Well, I was just getting started when you pulled in the reins simply because I got my heart broken a few times." Miss Fig thought a minute. "You were so impulsive, wanting to run with any drifter who came along." "That's not exactly true-- I just didn't want to live  a boring 9 to 5 life-- I didn't want to be you." Miss Fig closed her eyes.  The quiet let her believe that the girl was gone;  Annie often left like that. But Annie was still there. "You're just 50, hmm? That's really not so old, There's lots of time ahead."   "You ought to know my age. And no, I'm not ancient yet. Maybe I am still young enough for some lifestyle changes." "Yoga?"  "Maybe." "A cruise?" "Maybe." "Class reunion?" "Maybe." "Internet dating?" "Don't be ridiculous!" "Between your bifocaled  experience and my  youthful outlook, Miss Fig, we're going to do it right this time, aren't we?" "See you Annie." "Good night Miss Fig."
