A NATIONAL PRAYER

Heavenly Father we stand before you, stripped of indifference, irreverence and pretensions. As a nation founded on freedom and religious beliefs, we turn to you in this our greatest hour of need. We give thanks for the many blessings we have received, and for the protection you have always provided. Today in our darkest moments we come together in prayer, seeking guidance, solace and deliverence from fear. Many of us have strayed from the religious tenets that helped to make this country great; now once again, tragedy has brought us together in spirituality, unity and love. In these turbulent and uncertain times, we beseech you to hear our prayers and heal our wounds. We ask you to keep our hearts open infinitely-so we may continue to bestow love upon family, friends and even strangers. Temper our anger and keep us from seeking revenge in the pursuit of our enemies; but help us to remain fierce and relentless in the quest to rout out evil. Bless the nation's leaders with wisdom and foresight; help them to understand the scope of commitment and the consequences of failure. We ask you to guide our President with spiritual guidance, and enduring strength for the Herculean tasks ahead. Help us to turn tears of pain and sorrow into positive energy and resolve. Help us to become better citizens, embracing all individuals, regardless of race, color or ethnicity. Let us be aware that bigotry, profiling and discrimination diminish who we are, and weaken bonds of unity. Let us always remember our heroes and all those who perished on that horrendous day-September 11, 2001. Let renewed patriotism remain long after grief and outrage; and American pride erect a new and impregnable symbol of prosperity. Let us not be fearful; but take heart in the words of Franklin D.Roosevelt during World War II. "We will gain the inevitable triumph-so help us God"
