The Road and Creek (in WV)

I walk the road, the lonely road That wanders through these hills. In the valleys, through the hollows, Past places I once knew. Where every Mailpouch is a landmark And every stranger is a friend, In each house there lies a home, Mine is at the end. Along the road, a small creek runs, The folks here call her Laurel. She carries the blood from the hearts That binds these folks together. All the streams feed into her And a river waits ahead. With our blood her waters roll, Into her channel, the mountains are bled. By this road, and by this creek, Many folks have laughed and cried. In the valleys, through the hollows, Many more have lived and died. My heart lies deep in these mountains, Beating in rhythm with those from the past. Where the road ends and the creek begins, I will die, but my heart will last.
