In Lieu of Flowers

Take no more breaths, make no more noise, Extinguish all sounds of life and its joys. Close all the blinds and listen in dim To a funeral sonnet, a processional hymn. Close down the school, end the workday, No more shopping or crowds, it's time to pray. To pray for the loss of my loved one, it's my turn. Make up for your apathy your lack of concern. While I sit here straining, abstaining from life, To hear the voice of my only love. My strife Is to realize that I have not been alone Until now, left with dirty dishes and a silent phone. Send no more cards, no more sympathetic lines, Instead send recognition of our love, at least a sign To say that you knew, that you cared that he and I were one, Man to man, heart to heart, a love now undone. Then go home to your husband, or hug your wife And be thankful for the blessings that you share in life. And so I sit in this dark and dim, I cry. I listen. I strain to hear him.
