Keeping the silence

It was a time when patent leathers still had their straps and lacy ankle socks got ate up in the heel of my shoe. The rust colored school was still alive, with its bell that nobody rang and a box full of fine, white sand. It was a day when the air was heavy with the scent of blackberries and the butterflies lighted on the lantana, growing wild at the edge of the yard.  And the berries turned my fingers red, like the stains left on the driveway,  as I threw the fruit down hard, spilling out the bitter seeds. The day sat still while old lady Wahlman peeked through the curtains, shaking her long bony finger, as she paced back and forth from the kitchen; checking her pot roast and potatoes, blowing the smell out into the wind with a big  box fan. Mama boarded up the windows, saying she couldn't stand the stench. Then, the evening came, where I slept with the covers pulled tight, and my arms stiff by my side, listening to the fan drone the night away as the air got thick and the room got humid.  The floorboards creaked as I waited in the darkness for the silence to break, bringing the dawn of a new day. But, I awoke in the morning to the same day, the stains on my hands still fresh with the scent of bitter fruit... and my hope silent as the bell.
