The Lady! Just sittin' here drinking - my bud and I with a sip an' swallow between each sigh; an' talkin' some trash like guys'll do... and that's when "She" walked in the room! She weren't no bigger than a half-a-buck but had the grace and poise of a purebred pup; She wore a frilly white blouse and blackish jeans, and a smile that'd prompt perpetual dreams. And the band was playin' and the crowd was swayin' and the sun made way for the desert moon. I couldn't stop grinnin' 'cause my heart was sinnin', as I watched her slowly cross the room. Then she sauntered up she mouthed a "Hi", (Damn, my heart was poundin' and I knew why...) but I swallowed hard and I "Howdy'd" back; recalling every step of her bar-room tack. She sat there beside us and ordered a drink, and I froze solid - couldn't move or speak - and though huddled there like a big mushroom... my mind was out-racin' a freakin' typhoon. And the band kept playin' and the folks kept swayin' and the bar-maids hummed that country tune; While I hoped for a chance for just one little dance, with the lady I'd just watched cross that room. So I couraged up and asked her to dance: She said "Sorry hon, but this here's too fast; but if they should play a slower tune - I'd be pleased as punch to dance with you." The music was thumpin' and the room was jumpin' and the cowboys howled to the desert moon. I said this ain't fair! and I left my chair, and the lady who'd just walked 'cross that room. Then I slipped that band-man twenty bucks, and said "this rock-and-roll-country really sucks; but if you'll just play me one slow tune, I'll kiss your dog and your sister too!" Then the band changed gears and I clenched my fears, and I asked if she'd dance to this mellow-tune? I was most in a trance - but oh, what a dance - just me and the lady that crossed that room. And the band still plays and the room still sways, and I dream of that night 'neath the desert moon; And my life's replete - with memory sweet - 'cause I danced with the lady...that crossed that room! |
