Some Reflections After Attending A Tent Revival ..

Why, and by Whom, was I given this mind  With which to view life and explore it; The freedom to open the door to the wind, Or just close the door and ignore it. This tent preacher said it was 'freely given' By God, with one simple instruction. Follow His rule book straight up to heaven Or discard it, and reap your destruction. There is no middle ground I was told, No time to question this 'truth,' to doubt; Only faithless fools, those brazenly bold, Risk their souls while they're sorting it out. According to him, certain fruits were forbidden, And the 'tree of life' would remain out of reach To all but those who had been forgiven By God, or by those ordained to preach 'The Word.'  And blind faith, he said, the only path That crossed to the banks of that heavenly river Flowing with blessings and safe from God's wrath. His God, he declared, was no 'Indian' giver. And the fate of those who held back, still, Attempting to separate fiction from fact; They, chained by the power of Lucifer's will, Would be damned to 'hell's fire' for failure to act. Though he cried and pleaded for souls yet unswayed, And threatened the dark of eternal damnation;   Like stones in their seats as the final hymn played, Sat those still unwilling to take his salvation. Aisles heavily swelled with his newly saved flock, Overcome with emotion and physically spent. All turned tear stained faces to take final stock Of the few stubborn souls who remained yet unbent. Priest, rabbi, minister, guru, when speaking, Each of you preaches there's only your way. You condemn those of us who continue in seeking To find our own 'truth' before that judgement day. Why, and by Whom was I given this mind With which to consider such freedom of choice. Seeking God on the road less travelled, I find, The need to pay heed to my own 'inner voice.'
