ALZHEIMERS

She epitomized the Christian life. She was a mother and a wife. A lovely lady all could see. She was a mother-in-law to me. She was only in middle age When life began to turn a page. At first forgotten things were small, Most were not important at all. Slowly, slowly her life was changed. Everything had to be rearranged. Her family had to cope with this, As awareness came of something amiss. She would panic when away from home. Soon she couldn't be left alone. A change in personality was seen, This gentle woman became quite mean. In time it took a tremendous toll, This disease eroded her very soul. A woman once so good and kind Was becoming lost within her mind. Time came when she could not converse. One would think it could get no worse. No quality of life was left to her, No possibility of a cure. Like a thief, it snatched her mind. In the end, all that was left behind Was nothing but an emply shell, Imprisoning her in a personal hell. Locked away inside herself, Like being placed upon a shelf To be stored like a Dresden doll- No life left to her at all. She was confined to a nursing home Where she suffered all alone. Nothing more could be done Except to wait for the end to come. The last time that I saw her there, I held her hand and stroked her hair, And wondered if she was aware Of who I was, or why I cared. Leaving her that day, As I walked away Down the hall, I turned to see Her eyes following after me. The memory of that haunts me still, As I'm sure it always will. Someday I really wish to know Why God let her suffer so. Now the Lord has taken her home- This lovely lady, so obviously his own. I trust she now has peace and love, At home with Him in Heaven above.

Additional Notes:
My Mother-in-law suffered for approximately 18 years with alzheimers, and died 3 days after her 77th Birthday on December 28 l990. Alzheimer's is one of the most terrible diseases that I have ever encountered. It robs you of everything until in the end the only thing that moves are your eyes. This poem was written in her memory.
