Christmas Star

Telltale waterstains on the wall, a carpet still damp from burst pipes, dark clouds of another crisis passed slowly on the coldest day. Chill of nagging worry  echoed in the bitter-cold December winds. Still an unfinished task hovered in the solemn aftermath. Bonnie's ambitious quest waited in dire anticipation, tugging at my desire to wallow in self pity. I found myself immersed in a mountain of matchbox cars, barbie dolls, tonka trucks, and tiny terry sleepers of pastel pink and blue. Names  and numbers on stacks of forms took on the personality of each hopeful child. I felt warmth radiate from the hand-knitted mittens soon to protect tiny fingers from biting cold. I felt the comfort new boots would provide in the crisp snow. I felt the contentment of snuggling under the "puffy" quilt on Christmas Day... A mother arrived, shyly asking for packages in her daughters' names. Two tiny girls stared at the bags bursting with brightly wrapped gifts. Through a sweet, innocent smile ,one asked, "Are you Santa?" That night,as I peered up at the black winter sky, I felt the hopes and dreams of a needy child  sparkle with every Christmas star.

Additional Notes:
I usually don't like corny poems.I try to avoid writing them, but this piece is about an actual event that happened one Christmas Eve.My wife was in charge of a program that provided needs and wants for children who would otherwise go without at Christmas. We had had a tough time that winter.Getting involved in "Operation Santa" taught me a valuable lesson.I believe I learned the true meaning of Christmas that cold, tough winter day.
