A Simple Handshake I will know when I have arrived Closer to where I want to be. When my touch is warm, And no cold fingers Hang me up In compromise. When a simple handshake, Willingly offered, And accepted with dignity, Is no surprise. When I no longer linger With my expectations Unfulfilled, long enough To surmise That I've been slighted; Or let kindnesses unreciprocated Remain with me As injured pride. When a simple handshake Becomes symbolic Of the need I had for validation Being now fulfilled by me. I will know when I have arrived Closest to where I want to be. When I can accept the truth About myself With enough humilty And awareness to forgive My own spirit its frailty, And become a soul made free To release this crusty layer Of accumulated grief And anger. Helplessness And hopelessness That took lifetimes to learn, Let go in one short prayer. I will know when I have arrived At just the place I need to be. When that simple handshake Is with God Bringing ultimate relief Of reunion with the Universe... and eternity. |
