Tonight is Not For Sleep

“Tonight is not for sleep.” Said Inspiration. “Write with your heart Let your fingertips weep. Wander to places you have never been Ride a crisp, fallen leaf down a cold wooded stream Bath in the hot springs of your past Let words, on paper, grow like grass. Breathe deeply, and feel no fear You are not alone, but no one is watching Until the morning or sleep wins, I’ll be near Just me… and I am just you sitting here.” So, I write. My hands type furiously and my heart burns inside me Like the two fat candles burning beside me I check in with my muse every now and then To see how he’s doing with his own burning pen. I travel to a rainforest and swing from a tree I fly above the dessert and perch on a pyramid I visit Australia, Taiwan and Tennessee Now I’m ready for something familiar to me I visit my home where I slept as a child Sit at my desk in my first classroom Smell hot chocolate twenty years old Feel sensations I’ve not felt in a while. And I reply. “Thank you for visiting me tonight. It’s been a while since I’ve seen you. Things just haven’t seemed quite right, But, now I remember why I need you.”
