Margaret's Jewelry

your shoulder blades and various muscles mutter about inequity and regret. the coffee chants and steams with sundry incantations, but winds up performing medicinal rather than magical functions, and she is gone. we reach this point in the story every day: where our hero summons all his powers of reasoning and logic and condenses all his vast life experience and calls upon his sovereign deity and makes the fateful decision about whether he even wants to be a part of this fucking story anyway. she left a cheap amethyst ring she says she stole from her grandmother and two beaded hoopy earrings you think that her grandmother never would have worn. a man would have been up front and merely peed on the furniture, but this, you reflect, displays a more refined sense of style. your life has been pulled out of the box and it is a little disturbing to realize that it is exactly like a game of chutes and ladders, rigged so you never land quite at the head or foot of either. you get to know the space you are in when the dice go cold. she is a potential distraction who refuses to be one and you are constantly surprised by your involvement with her smile, the quiet you feel as you listen to her talk of her father and mother, and the way the salt keeps slipping off her tail, no matter how perfectly you place it. she does this great thing every morning: she leaves me to my own, the coffee and the life that i keep stepping through.
