Death's Smirk

Rotted slate teeth greet me each morning, Some, like faded piano keys, Others, like folding chairs in a tempest, Mottled incisors zip by.      I close my eyes,      But the inscriptions singe my mind,      In Memory of,      Here Lies. . . Gloomy teeth serve as a timepiece, Filled with decades of decay, Hiding husks of empty memories, Putrefied fillings not to be exhumed.      I cover my ears,      But the words slam my skull,      Ashes to Ashes,      Dust to dust. . . Blackened teeth bid good night,  Flickering by like an old news reel, Dull cracked canines gnaw at the darkness, Shades of gray melt into the shadows.      I pinch my nose,      But the stench fills my head,      Freshly buried flesh,      Centennial bones. . .
