In Case You Didn't Know

She thinks it doesn't grieve me when I think about the past, that I'm happy that we're over and I'm glad we didn't last. How can she know how frequently it is I feel the pain of our parting and the need to feel her close to me again. Heart so broken, words unspoken, feelings felt, not shared. Embers burning, heart still yearning, for the one who cared. How deftly fate has cut me with its undiscerning knife. How deeply felt are wounds inside, scars that you bear for life. Should I pretend and try to mend these wounds another way? Or would my efforts only bring more pain some other day? Paths untraveled, fates unraveled, following the course. No reassuring, just enduring times of brief remorse. Some people try to pick and choose the paths that they will trod. While others seem to base their lives upon the will of God. But I have always looked ahead and been content to wait for my path to open up before me, leaving all to fate. Is the final curtain always certain?  When can I stay, not go? When your religion's indecision, how are you to know? What once was such a happy love, a timeless work of art, frayed around the edges as it slowly came apart. And now our paths have parted though she'll never understand the reason that it ended, why I let go of her hand. Seasons ending, heartaches mending, working through the pain. So confusing when you're losing all you've worked to gain. For whatever crazy reasons that I chose to let you go, you'll always be so special, just in case you didn't know. And though our time is over and this chapter's at an end. Though words and deeds have hurt us, I still want to call you friend. Collect the pieces, smooth the creases, can we pay the cost? A different season, for different reasons, don't let it all be lost.
