In the same kind of way... In the same kind of way that my father told us that the egyptian pyramids were made out of georgia marble, and that the jews ruled the world with their black secret police, he told us that Janet Reno was his sister. And in the same kind of way I had of disagreeing without quite listening I dismissed this information also. This was different though, Janet acknowledged having a family that she was ashamed of and, what she said was no longer about strangers but, about my family and perhaps about me though we had never met. I started listening. I had missed too many voices in my childhood, growing up far from the south I was born in, not to wonder if this too was a voice I had missed. The geneology project I started in graduate school was left unfinished. I found I could not turn it in with all the missing names. Names of my fathers brothers who died in World War II. I sometimes wonder how the same blood can run through such different veins. |
