If I Could

If there was a moment before a smile was knowing or a glance furtive, a little gap just before  tears welled up in your eyes at the news, then like a heavy door  I would pry it open and squeeze us  into the crack between cognition and shock, and huddled in that timeless tunnel we would ready for the aftermath,  the horror.
