In the bed of last night

in the bed of last night my lover hears me thinking in response to her breathing which laps  at the curve of my ribs like the flutter of unsteady water  soft and hot. and she rolls her spent body away, like a long, smooth stone in the forest she leaves the dank and humid evidence of our receding affections the sweat and musk of effluence in vitro on the sheets and I am caught by the sight of it and my stomach abruptly curdles with the bitter taste of fear foaming like vinegar up into my throat it is 1974 and me in pajamas and my mother as busy forgiving Nixon as her deft, bible-belt fingers are folding the crusts of my bread into caterpillars, helping them walk the mush of the milk into my little mouth with the drone of the black and white zenith setting on the kitchen counter the president of all people guilty and quiet  in a splash of white near the open box of cornstarch. I was not a crook though my stomach told me otherwise as my mother making gravy that day like so many other Sundays filled us with pot roast in an attempt to keep Paul’s charge to the Corinthians as if love were a consequence of propriety or forgiveness could be folded neatly off the line. when I was a child I spoke as a child I understood as a child I thought as a child But now that I am a man I have put away childish things like the memory that grips me now of waking up from the haven of dreams into 12 years of mornings, so ripe and portentous (the essence of mornings and  children) and losing my stomach at the discovery of  the cold, clinging sheets and wondering at the possibilities of God’s beneficence being extended to someone who needed a diaper. I have instant recall of these three: the soaked and acrid-bitter sheets their fallow  cling on my legs the comfort of the morning heating vent under the piano which helped with the smell., Linens not quite as wonderfully appointed as these. Love is patient and kind and washes the sheets. And she did but her face would melt every morning, into a froth of scorn and disgust the substance of which was so thinly removed from her patience and love that many mornings (like this one) would find me shivering and still marked faintly with the smell of it the sour milk and lemonade which followed me to the table after I pulled the spread up over the sodden sheets with the hope that I could escape into the day before I took those looks like a sandbag across my shoulders before they became so much a festering weevil  chewing blindly in the furrowed recesses of my fragile identity. She pulled most of it off, my mother, and so that you will not misunderstand amidst all the wet beds and bible and the accompanying finger-pointing she had magic as well could conjure at will the finest grilled cheese I have ever tasted and her fingers tracing alien alphabets across my back during the endless sermons of  youth would cast a spell of silence and delight in my unspoiled bones. The appearance of love is so powerful you see I would not impeach her for many years and not at least until my stomach was beyond her reach until I was grown tall enough to see to my own needs and so in this sense I am as guilty as she of trading necessity for love. my lover is stirring next to me. her breathing has become a squall fraught with flurries of coughing and sighs. she has been sick these last few days like my mother never was or at least never let on to as if that was the way to show love. as if this is the way to forgive.

Additional Notes:
Curious about how the various themes intertwine here: the nixon image and impeachment, the corinthians reference, the bed wetting, my mother's restrictive version of love. I'd appreciate any specific comments on this aspect of the piece.
