WANDERLUST

Wandering, some of us never learn to trust Dizzily blowing like dust in a whirling dervish Fearful of rust and chains even more, of pain No roots weigh us down or keep us from flying yet, so afraid are we of dying alone. Forever capricious Flying, first this way then that with each passing gust Busily filling each day with anything that moves fast Anything that we know will not last Endlessly, pursuing meaningless movement, unable to relate the lessons of our past.    Foolishly flitting from one to another So many yet, never committing to any Guiltily sitting  on the proverbial fence we may be found resting once in awhile Never nesting Lest one with a smile and a need to convince us to make a decision  might elicit a wince of pain Send us fluttering once again.  Awake or asleep we'll never make promises we cannot keep Avoiding  at all cost, anything deep or involved, for we're lost  Mere sleepwalkers, muttering of dim, distant places where we might hide from the light of day Even there, where only shadows abide in the dark interfaces we cannot stay for long. Early on the morrow with new sunrise appearing we recognize our mournful song And on hearing it surround us we fill with sorrow as this dirge  of a million tears resounds our regrets for the love we've wasted and all the years already spent, wandering.

Additional Notes:
This poem was inspired by a shorter one written 11-29-89. Never posted, I expanded it and, honestly, folks, even when I try, I cannot seem to dispense with the rhyme (I know how much it turns "off" so many TPL poets). The minimal use of punctuation was intentional. Using commas only where needed for breaks, I hoped the natural breaks in the lines along with the CAPSs would allow for the flow in reading it. Open to any and all comments. thanks!
