Dancing around Daisies Trapped in tangled sheets with your taste fresh on my lips, I am restless until I again feel your warm belly against my back. Softly, in my ear you ask what I'm thinking And I talk and talk Of daisies. My words, a whisper away from truth embroider and overwhelm the moment. After all it is only You and Me. And the daisies that bloom from my mouth sound like this: I wish we'd grown up together; We could have been best friends. We'd climb trees, catch bullheads In the creek at the edge of town. We'd race the summer wind, Or build ourselves an igloo with Perfect angels in the fresh snow. We'd sleep next to one another Every single summer night 'til fall, And watch the flashing fireflies, or Lay awake and count the stars, and I would not have been frightened For you would certainly behead the barbarians and spare not a single blade of grass. And after, we could sit together on a clean cloud without guilt or embarrassment and look down through the cloud and see the world as it is. And I would tell everyone my earliest memories and they would be true and not daisies. I hear myself breathe, And feel the long line Of my body Shift. And with each step, Deliberate And Turtle slow within your waters, the days pass October, November, December Falling around our bed. And the daisies weep And moan, Upon our sheets. And our words quicken you, Around me. And me around you I walk The fields of daisies Which lie about you. You teach me To wait And wait, For this And that. You measure out your breath to me, And mine to you Until you're assured That all is orderly And even And we spread daisies And take measurements Until at last between us measurement and daisies end. And you whisper as we start to dance, "Be gentle with me. You're my best chance." |
