A man I never knew (Ode to Joe’s dad)

You speak of him with gentle voice; Weave your stories well… I can feel his essence In the anecdotes you tell. A man of many strengths Loved -- and well respected His children were important And he kept them all protected He was not afraid to laugh Was not too strong to cry His family was his life You could see it in his eye His hands were tough and callused From hard work every day But his heart was giving “That was just his way.” He lived life to the fullest Drove --  “as if he owned the road” Never met a stranger. Never shirked a load. In his time on earth He planted many seeds Flowers that are growing still Fertilized, by his good deeds It occurs to me… This is not; a man I never knew Because so much of him Is “living” -- Inside you.

Additional Notes:
Last weekend was the second anniversary of Joe’s dad’s death. I was following Joe home and when we got close to his house he started driving on the wrong side of the road. When we arrived I told him I was worried we had taken a wrong turn and ended up in England… He laughed and said, it’s my dad’s road (the road is named after his dad) and I’ll drive how I want; then he told me that his dad could often be seen driving on the wrong side or down the middle. He told me several stories about this and people saying that in spite of the near misses it caused (Joe had one himself) that they miss seeing his blue truck. I know they miss the man as much as Joe does.
