Silver

Aunt Lora's legacy: a shock of silver hair, light to dark, silver-grey eyes, silver dangle ear-rings, silver chains, a white knit shirt sequined in silver, embroidered with gold. A silver concho belt encircling her wasted life. Four years her carefully wrapped silver laid untouched in a dresser drawer. Undeserved affection from my husband's aunt. Visits brief and far between. The entire time of our acquaintance she battled the silent relentless enemy---cancer, the crab whose claws sank deep into her life, tarnishing her silver years. Missed a last "good-bye", a formal farewell. Her visitation and funeral not attended---by me. Thoughts cascade with the feel of velvet, a drawstring jewelry bag I uncover. I bring forth a stream of liquid silver, drape its waterfall around my neck, let it reach between the chasm of my breasts. Curious, I note spots marring the flow of silver light. Tarnish, rust? My fingers rub at the spots... Dry blood flakes away...Her blood... the last remnants of her life.  Sorrow gently returns her gift into its bed of soft, burgundy velvet. The gift of her life touching mine. Forgiveness, memory I wear around my heart. And the dampness of my eyes this morning owes nothing to the misty rain outside.
