My David

My David we were young together we grew together we saw each other change from a boy to a man. My memory pictures those days in a scrapbook of love and resentment. Young men you and I growing apart though separated more in thoughts than distances but still the binds of a childhood together held us close. We both looked ahead but in different directions. You spoke of things that never entered my mind. I tried to understand because they came from you but even then you were becoming a stranger. That last time together it was alive it was electric. We both were talking about we both were taking that step into tomorrow. As we did, we smiled exchanging glances assured we would master the years ahead. Yes, my David I was scared and I turned around  to look for you but you weren't there you weren't anywhere. That step was all you got and that last look was all I got from you no goodbye, only a smile only that glance. I wanted to cry I thought I should but how could I? You were the reason for the tears and you took them all away with you when you died. Then I realized I no longer knew you. I think of you now many years gone I am lonely for you and I hurt. It's funny I thought after so much pain I would understand but still I can't cry. Yet I do remember those things you said once so strange they aren't anymore and I know you'd be happy because my David after all these years I think I finally  know you again.
