The Buckskin

He was such a spry buckskin with long, flowing mane And the look in his eye made it perfectly plain He  was wiry and quick—prob’ly mean to the core And so proud that he’d never been ridden before Then a cowboy walked up without blinking an eye He looked the horse over and thought he might try To subdue this ol’ pony (all yellow and black) And we all held our breaths as he eased on his back With a snap that was deaf’ning, they spun round ‘n’ round With a snort the old horse drug his nose on the ground His wild eyes rolled back as he bit at the feet Of the cowboy who rode, hangin’ tight in his seat For the young cowboy sat there just like he was glued And we all knew from THEN on, this kid was no dude When the dry dust had settled, the buckskin was through It appeared he had just learned a lesson or two So the two became friends and for day after day Where the ONE was, the other was not far away The pony had cow-sense and willingness too There just wasn’t much that this horse couldn’t do! * The buckskin still stands in his very own place The varnish has peeled from his neck and his face But we still can recall with a great deal of pride The day that our two-year-old broke him to ride.

Additional Notes:
This poem was first published in a 1966 issue of Western Horseman Magazine under the name of Marcia Hoffman. It was in the days before Cowboy Poetry became a category and S. Omar Barker was the WH's main cowboy poet. It was then published in the Nevada Appeal, THe Wyoming Rural Electric Magazine and THe Canadian Horse-- maybe others, but I can't remember. It was actually written about my daughter, but everyone assumed it was written about a little boy. Fond memories here...
