The Chat

You invited me into your home for a visit -  a welcome to the neighborhood. I stood in your foyer and you stood in your living room –  a dark hallway separated us. I became aware, as we talked, that someone else was in the house -  standing at the back door, in your view but not mine. She had one hand on the knob of the door, uncertain whether to stay or leave. You stood there, in your living room, one eye on me and one eye on her –  unwilling (unable) either to invite me in further or to bid her farewell. And she stayed there, at the back door, one eye on you and one eye on the door –  unwilling (unable) to choose leaving or staying. And I stood there in your foyer, both eyes on you –  unwilling to leave your house. Simply unable.
