If There Be But One God (revised)

Dust, rises in spires, like the cries from their grave. Unjust. Rocks, rubble, fires. In the heart of a city, dying flames light night skies as the hot, tired brave give their last spark, out of love not of pity. Through choking grey smoke, as they die, they cry out interrupted in time. Souls intermingle in space in that moment seeing what their lives were about; each unique in their way, bequeathing their place in our memories. Suddenly, thousands are gone leaving hundreds of thousands behind to grieve this unbearable loss. Children, wives, husbands,alone. Left with burdens we pray that God soon will relieve. If there be but one God, then all share the shame of mankind intertwined in both evil and good. All now must carefully sift for the truth; beware the game of vengeance, lest intentions be misunderstood.  Misguided extremes on either side are faces of lies that lead us to war, shackle our hearts in terror;  senseless acts by enemies, though unseen, we despise. Yet sins of omission continue the error.

This was written after last Sept. 11th's tragedy. It has undergone revision and so I submit it again.
