The Third Grade Teacher

Mrs. Mary Bloodworth hurriedly pulled a fresh tissue  from her purse, swiped her dampened brow. Summer not done, yet another schoolyear had begun. Mary had been teaching, reaching children now for, not counting summers, nearly thirty-five years. From a teacher's viewpoint, Mary thought that possibly by now she'd seen or, else, heard it all. Through thick-lensed glasses she saw her classes as a world microcosm: the short ends and tall; scraped knees and elbows; bruised hearts and tears. As she reviewed this new class roster,  memories cascaded over her. From moments of joy sublime to torments of terrible sorrows......, she mused. Mary had been through enough in her lifetime, that this list of new names dredged up old fears. Her classes had changed through time. Once pristine white, they were now a hodgepodge of races and creeds. Problems changed through time; ranged from the petty to the most complex cruelties and intimate misdeeds. Most of her peers, fed-up, had long since fled to other careers. Mrs. Mary Bloodworth gingerly placed the dampened tissue in the trash can beside her graffitied old desk. One early bird filed in , smiled, and right then, the issue became whether this last year of 'reaching' would be her best; whether these children would enter her life-scrapbook of 'dears.'

Additional Notes:
Just thinking of school beginnings and memories come rushing in. I particularly remember the third grade and my teacher (although for different reasons). It was a somewhat traumatic year for me ( an 'eyeopener'). Names used are purely fictional......blame it on arnie..he got me into a nostalgic "thinking" mood............drenda
