"Our Bullets are Bigger than Their Bullets"

Only a mother would give it a second glance, but as I stared at crude stick men, I found myself fascinated by each detail of crayon scribbles, wedged between science and spelling,  a dab of peanut butter, left over from snack, on one corner. The stick men looked more like fat ants, who had feasted  on the leftover peanut butter, then crawled to their places  on the paper, and stood up like sentries, stick guns in hand. But those big PURPLE bullets really drew my attention. Above the purple projectiles, an over-sized American flag  was flying high upon matching purple pole with PURPLE,  white, and blue stripes--no red, how odd, "why" I asked, "did you choose purple for stripes, it's the wrong color" "I ran out of red, and purple was all I had," he stated, peanut butter sandwich in hand, diving outside to play.  This simple drawing had a menagerie of meaning to me,  as I remembered tragic events that triggered its creation. Only a week before, huge buildings of strong steel had suddenly crumbled to the ground like tinker-toy towers, before the eyes of the whole world, leaving only rubble, on top of destroyed lives and helpless victims to mourn. Americans fell to their knees in agony, but not in defeat. "The teacher told me to draw a picture about The Star Spangled Banner, and how I feel about what happened last week, " my 10-yr-old explained his assignment. I realized this was his simple vision...of war...unreal to his mind...yet, so real to me, triggering memories of war, Viet Nam battlefields, visions his dad painted in my mind, sad stories of the bloody fields of death. From his heart came make-believe guns, stick figures, a biggg flag, and huge PURPLE projectiles--his bullets. No blood or wounded on his simple, crayon battlefield. Before my eyes, that flag and those bullets grew bigger! My heart colored between the lines my son had drawn. I could think of dozens of reasons to justify this war  on terrorism, but his future freedom topped that list.  America's greatest weapons are not deadly  missiles or cold steel of hatred of our enemy. There power was understood by men of valor, such as King David and George Washington. They are understood in the heart of a child. If we lose these weapons, we become like  the enemy we despise, full of hate and venom. "Why are the purple bullets SO BIG?" I asked my son. "Just because, mom, our bullets are bigger than theirs!" He has no whys or reasons...just simple faith...in me,  in his school and Sunday school teacher, in the people who taught him that America still stands...for freedom.  We are winners when our weapons are compassion mixed with courage and faith in God and each other. In the midst of despair and destruction came heroes, so many we shall never hear of, so many sacrificed life to save another, no greater love was ever seen. A wounded America fell to her knees, reaching up  for God's Hand of Strength, and out to each other. People of all backgrounds joined hands in prayer, together in love, together in faith, together in unity. If we are to win, my friend, these are our weapons. This war must be won in the hearts of Americans  before it is won on the battlefield or we fight in vain. As I tucked Josh into bed, I sang his favorite song, "Jesus loves me," holding him ever closer, I prayed a simple prayer, believing my bullets are stronger  than enemy bullets, knowing my bullet of prayer travels straight to the heart of God, exploding  with compassion in a blaze of glorious love.

Additional Notes:
I have been trying to write this one for a year and just got it finished. I didn't get it done by the 9/11 anniversary, but I wanted to submit it before the end of September. I hope this true story will stir your hearts as it did mine. Eventually I want to take a picture of this drawing and place it with the poem on my personal poetry website. It is such a treasure.
