When I submitted my first poems last week, I didn't think I would find myself on the site for hours at a time, waking up in the night thinking about it. I guess I have an obsessive personality. I am middle-aged and still reconciling myself to the fact. I teach English at a private school in Dallas, and I am working on my dissertation (which is something I should be doing right now instead of lounging in poetry-land) I just had my first two poems published in The Texas Observer, although I have been writing poetry and teaching writing for almost 20 years. (sigh) My two grown sons are writers too. One has stalled at 150 pages of his first novel, and the other is a song writer who recently was able to give up his day job. I married my husband because he wrote such great letters, so I guess that's the thread that ties us--or one thread anyway. It's great that there is a place where people get rewarded for reading poetry. To me, it's serious business. To own a pen does not make a poet anymore than owning a saxophone makes a jazz improvisationalist.
