John R. Birkbeck's Profile:
I was a late bloomer, and had not published a poem until I was in my middle forties. Since
then, I've published five books of poems, and have appeared in numberless magazines, web zines,
journals, and anthologies, world-wide. Before I retired, I made my living, for over thirty years,
as a scientific illustrator, and worked for Dr. James Van Allen for whom the radiation belts
round the earth are named.
Before that, I had spent eight years in the Air Force, and after that, wandering aimlessly,
round the world, taking courses at universities in whatever place I'd settle into for a while,
and work at low-paid, dead-end jobs until I finally went to work for James van Allen at the
University of Iowa.
I studied mostly literature and art at the universities, and still maintain a painting studio
in downtown Iowa City.
In retirement, I've found a new career in Television Production at a couple of local stations,
In fact, I've just finished taping a reading by a WWII veteran who gave a reading about his
experiences as a combat medic.
This brings me down to this present moment as I type out this form,
very happy to be a member of this wonderful group of poets. I think I've finally found
my El Dorado!!
