Sue Black's Profile:
Hello My Fellow Poets ........ And My Kindred Spirit When I first joined TPL last summer I didn't want to reveal too much on the BIO ... I wanted to see if my work could speak for me. And it has. So, now, I will try to fill in the blanks. My first attempt at writing a love poem was at the ripe old age of 6 .... "little Johnny's" mother was quite impressed....however, I can't say the same for my Mom. After that point, unless required in my studies, I kept my poetry to myself. My first play was at age 8 ... we were required to take a nursery rhyme and turn it into a play. I wrote, directed, and starred in my version of "Little Red Ridin' Hood". It earned an A+. At age 9, we were required to write our own play. Again, of course, I wrote, directed, and starred in "The Trees Of The Forrest". Another A+ notched upon my belt!! I entered my first and only essay contest at age 11. "Why I Love America" won first place in the competition against the other entries in my county, earning my first plaque. I placed in the top 10 over the state, however, no trophy!! Of my 44 years, I have been writing for 38 of them. My poetry is my therapist, I pour my heart and soul into my work. Rhyming comes so easily for me ... but I have been trying my hand at free verse on an ocassion or two. My life has not been that of a simple one. I am a true blue country girl from a rural area in eastern Kentucky. My favorite song is "Redneck Girl" by the Bellamy Brothers, and my favorite singer is Conway Twitty. I am 8 hours shy of my associate degree in computers, sociology, and business. I was diagnosised with two types of Muscular Dystropy in January 1979. The doctors gave me only a few short years to live ... they perdicted that I would not see my 25th birthday. Well guess what?? I fully intend to throw myself one blowout of a party on my 50th birthday as I will have beaten the Grim Reaper at his own game. I have partial memory loss of the first 27 years of my life due to a surgery gone bad. My formal training of poetry writing escaped along with 21 pints of blood through the drain in the surgical suite in Cincinnati in 1984. I do not remember anything about meters, pros, etc. So if my writing is not up to "par" under the rules and regulations of poetry writing ...... you now know why. I have held several interesting positions within the public work force as well as successful jobs here at home. I recently closed my gift shoppe .... and I now devote my time to what I truly enjoy. I do foil embossed napkins, computer generated designs, ad layouts, brouchures, web site building, and printing services, just to name a few. My ability to write a "happy" poem eludes me. I know "pain", sometimes all to well, and I can write about it. Maybe sometime over the next 38 years I'll be able to share it all. Thank you for stopping in to see what my condition was in. And a special "thank you" for those who have critiqued my poems, good and bad!!
