BUSY WORLD

I searched to find solitude and quiet  simply seeking  peace of mind; a few hours away, in the heart of shaded woods I found tranquility. Not one manmade sound reached me, a small piece of perfection but the peaceful quiet was  for my ears only. I heard songbirds sing of being pursued by ravens and raptors, while pine squirrels warned the world of each imminent danger. The wind rushed through evergreen needles mimicking the sound ocean waves make, adding to two broad-tailed hummingbirds woes during their jostle for best feeding ground flowers. An aerial dogfight un-matched by man or his planes, two angelic birds fighting for life itself- flying only three inches off the ground before diving into dual three-sixties one after another, then a slalom through spruce trees and branches. Paired perfection without error until- a winner is somehow declared but only until another hungry hummer appears for a new challenge. Worn out and nearly dizzy from mere observation of  their acrobatic battle for sustenance, my attention turned to the ground. Deaf to my ears but loud  with the activity of ants and other unnamed bugs.  All carry a serious desperation keeping even the smallest determined,  working proud and moving  as if on a mission. As well organized as any city but definitely not at all peaceful  and probably not quiet for ears that can hear in this micro-world. In the bug-free shade of quaking Aspens I nap and dream of grosbeaks and crossbills, noble birds that watch over me as I nap. Their red and orange hues peek out from the light side of the aspen leaves, waiting for the afternoon thunder to send me back where I came from…
