The Beginning

“Ya gotta ride with me." He whined. “Tell me how I’m doing.” I was pissed. He had hogged Almost all the screwdriver mix. “Just let me drive.” I said. “You don’t have your license yet.” “So what? I’m not drunk, And I drive better than you anyway.” “I’ll be alright just ride with me.” “Only if you stay behind the others.” So it began, I was sick with fear, helpless now. Oh god, this is an awful mistake Through town around the common Approaching the bridge over 95 “You’re doing good.” Maybe we’d make it. “You’re doing good.” Suddenly, “FUCK THIS!” He floored it on the straightaway And passed the others. “SLOW DOWN! SLOW DOWN! SLOW DOWN!” In abject terror I saw the needle hit 80 Oh God! Oh God! I braced my arms on the dash Head down, eyes closed. BAM! SLAM! Like cannon fire and FAST. Ground smashing, bushes bouncing, teeth clenching! God, so LOUD, Did I yell? Or scream? No, I made no sound. Sudden stunned dreamlike stillness,  “What happened?” he said. I looked at him, “You alright?”   “I think so.” “You FUCKING ASSHOLE!” Not a scratch, either of us. But I learned nothing. NOTHING! 1968, I was just beginning
