old man with photo

the outskirts of Nogales have held your life but could not hold your son’s the adobe walls behind you have held your home but could not hold his heart your tanned and weathered face has faced the world without pretense your only valued possession, a photo the plain wood frame holds the image of your only child your wife long dead and gone the war spent your son’s life and gave you a medal, a photo and a flag in exchange  the outskirts of Nogales have not seen your weeping just - your waiting

Additional Notes:
An assignment to write a poem based on a picture of an old man sitting on a wooden bench in front of his house, holding a photo of a man in uniform. The old man looked like endurance personified.
