Dear Jackie

Dear Jackie, I thought that I should read your notes   so I could understand,      just searching for some antidotes        to know your fairyland.       The pain that I found buried there      came from a living snake.   I learned from reading in your book the depth of your heartache. You’d been abused by your step-dad. He’d used you as a toy. When you were two he touched you bad, destroyed your hope and joy. You left your letters lay around so I could see your pain, you’d tell me little tiny things but never would explain. You  wrote a letter just for me when Valentine’s day came. You said you wanted to be close, but you were filled with shame. You did one hundred eighty days, and took it on the chin. I saw you hold your own in ways that I could not begin. I loved to see your spirit soar,     you made the cages rattle. I never tried to stop the war when you began a battle. I watched and wished that it was I  who donned the golden armor, except the final battle cry was only just a whisper. You grew from just an ugly duck to eighteen years of swan. You dammed a lake of run amok  now angels dance upon. I’ll miss that scared and tiny girl  who came off of her shelf. I helped you pack, I hugged you hard, you’ve grown into yourself. 05-2000  Laurie Dee
