On Leaving The lake - Revised

Today is like many others at the lake, skies blue, clouds white and wispy. From across the lake comes the hum of a speeding motorboat. A blue heron flies along the shore searching for a good place to fish. Loons gather in a large social group, fishing together, exchanging flutters of song. The crisp air of autumn has called this convocation. Having raised their chicks to independence, the loons now focus  on preparing themselves for migration. The open northern seas are calling. Soon they will exchange black and white plumage for winter gray until they matched the slate of the sea. I watch them dive out on the lake and know that I too will have to change my summer coat of ease and relaxation, for winter clothes of work and family duty. As the loons rise into the sky  And fly in ever enlarging circles I sigh with regret and start home, leaving the peace of Squam, and a piece of my heart. Irene Fraley    -    2004
