Ceremony - revised Fog settles, heavy above ground, tree branches grasping as he runs through pine woods.. Above, moon and stars shine, their beauty mantled by mist. He has a ceremony to perform marking the death of his father. Time runs down like dew from branches. Birds complain, marking territory. A nearby marsh smells of life brooding. Dimly seen cattails give way to twisted roots of fir embracing rough granite boulders. Sounds of water lapping gently mix with the tremolo of a distressed loon nesting at shore’s edge. He stands at lake's edge. Reaching into his backpack he withdraws a belt cracked and stained with blood. Holding the belt in both hands, he snaps it violently together. "Crack!" Sky reddens befire dawn, mist swirling about in obedience to the wind. He removes his clothes, wades into the chill water, sinks until he is fully submerged. Silence. He erupts from beneath the surface shouting "Never again, never!" He no longer grasps the belt. Freed at last from fear, he leaves the water, cleansed, reborn. His back, criss-crossed with scars, is erect. Sitting in silence, ceremony completed, he watches the lake in peace. Irene Fraley - 2004 |
Additional Notes:
I tried to tighten this up. Not sure if it's better, but then I tend to run on, don't I?
