This last line is simply unique and breathtaking. It's a gift how you're sanely able to do this James. You have chosen just the right words to again incorporate two thinks, Santa and Sanity. How you bring the mental mind in wrapped packages or unwrapped, in this case, is amazing. Your poems have a duality that cut deep down inside, and somehow I'm able to read both underlying illustrations and go two different places when I read poems like this. What a cute couple, Santa and mental health. Are we all crazy for believing in Santa or just for lying to our kids. You could go a million places with this title, but you took us somewhere grand. Thanks for sharing another good one. Latorial

The last line of the first stanza says it all to me. Well, to me it says that all the presents given will be or are as cover-up for whatever ails you...until the next time. Loved your title and I got a kick out of the whole thing. Thanks for the submission.

Hi James; I am back to TPL for another season, but hopefully longer than the silly season of which you write. You weave a mysterious view of Christmas for me. I had some trouble comprehending it all, but it is very melodic and witty at points like "all undertakings deserve interment." I'm not sure whether it should be "activity-eyed" with the hyphen. Gee, I really hating guessing your meaning, not wanting to misconstrue, but I will. Forgive me if I have it wrong. Christmas is a seaon of juxtaposition in which some (most) tend to do things they might not rather do, but they are swarmed with the hype, others (or their own) learned behaviours or expectations of what should be done. Reacting to the frantic impulses and manifested by the seduction of being lost in an imaginery state of contentment if all is accomplished. I love how you intertwined the critical reasoning, or natural justice thoughts with the opposing laissez-faire follow the masses view. Also, your ending is perfect. It's an incidentally learned process passed on to our descendents like a drug that makes one question..."why the heck am I doing all this?" Of course, many marketers can answer the question, or possibly magically talented psychologists. But be certain, it isn't your doing and keep it in perspective, it'll pass soon. Thanks for the interesting and thought provoking words. Mick

Dear James, This is perfect for this time of year. I absolutely love it, especially the last two lines. I had to smile at those. "Someones made up everything I know". Wonderful line! In a unique way you have described this holiday season - the confusion we bring upon ourselves, suspicious season is great too! We find ourselves surrounded by people who act "suspiciously" different towards us than they have all year - they are actually being nice, and we have to wonder why. It's almost as if everyone has been given a "happy" shot to get them through to New year, and then it all changes in the blink of an eye. I work in a dept of over 40 women - and you would not believe some of things they say this time of year - it really does challenge my mental health. It makes me wonder how anyone can enjoy the holiday if they get so stressed out by the whole thing - stress has never made me very "Merry". Best of luck with this and have a happy holiday! Sincerely, DeniMari
