Lament Sweet is the melody Salt is the taste of my tears I will remember them “He loved honour more than he feared death” Is written on a Canadian soldier’s tombstone in Beaumont-Hamel, France …he died in 1916 The motto “We will never forget” is etched in my brain forever You, you brave warriors died for me – yes died for me for I am still here amongst the living able to taste the sweetness of life that you are no longer able to do The Pipers played the Lament I lamented I salute you Hopefully there will be no more Veterans No more wars No more sounding Taps The soldiers are little more stooped now Their faces a little more creased now These are proud men and women who are not afraid to show their tears for their fallen I sit here in my warm house My belly full All because of them Our veterans I will not forget |
Additional Notes:
I wrote this today as I was watching TV the ceremonies from Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Canada. I was not able to attend our local ceremonies due to circumstances, but in every other way I was. Thank you for reading this poem that just came pouring out of me as I remembered them...our fallen heroes.
