A Christmas Tale

Remember long ago, that Christmas of white when we said â€œI do?”  Twinkling lights of red and blue, stars like bright      diamonds on drifts of snow. Remember how you wanted our children to believe in Santa forever?  So they believed till you were ready. They knew it was you outside their      window singing ho, ho, ho. Remember how we laughed when we put the Barbie doll house together inside out?  We went to bed at three and the children woke us at five      with a gleeful shout. Remember you were snow deluged and  wind buffeted as you made Reindeer  tracks in the yard?  You fell in the flower bed, so we laughed and tried  to be quiet so the kids wouldn’t know. Years pass, the children grow, mirth echoes off empty rafters and trees wear their winter dress. Remember making love in the glory of extraordinary silence? Remember how I cried when you took      your final breath?           I do

Marilyn, How simply lovely again a 'special' poem full of loving, happiness, and yes sorrow. What a great guy you had there. You are one of the lucky few to have known that love! I never had it... Your memories will sustain you forever. Merry holidays, Dellena

Marilyn, This is so deeply filled with emotions, a truly extraordinary poem. You should warn your readers when they will need a box of tissues handy. I am at a loss for words, however your final three lines impacted very heavely on me and my heart cries with yours. No nits here, this is accomplished writing. God Bless, Lora

That Christmas could serve so well to punctuate events in life, as shown here, is part of life-lived-well. The fullness has its own splendor and your ability to deal with it so lightly (I do) a device magnificantly applied, Marilyn. I think I'm getting Christmas already...supplied in full bounty by the ladies of TPL. Perhaps you're just trying to put me in a good mood so I'll be nice to everyone. I'm trying but my cheeks puff out sometimes. Merry Christmas, my dear. Texas has been really warm these last few days...maybe that will be a welcome change for you. JCH

Marilyn, this is absolutely heartwrenching. The first stanza offers so much beautiful imagery, and fondness of memory. I think we all were reminiscing right from the beginning. And, whose father never played "Santa?" What warm touching moments you have captured here, and in the wonderful stanza to follow. Reindeer tracks in the snow....how creative! Then comes the twist... Love the use of the word "mirth" here, and the imagery of the empty rafters...the echoing sound of an empty room invades the mind. What a sad, yet beautiful ending, my friend. However, you have left us (and yourself I'm sure) with some of the most wondrous memories to dwell on. My heart goes out to you, dear friend. This is such a touching, heartwrenching write. But, the beautiful images you painted in our mind yet linger. Brava, Marilyn! Beautifully done! Warmest regards Mary

I would think poet your eyes were misty from the beginning of this poem for it is so heart wearming, full of life, love and family.......two people joined together for life, the joys, the growing together as one and then the parting......The words just flowed and flowed as one image after another appeared; I stopped to laugh and catch my own breath as Santa made hoof marks in the snow........he was such a wonderful husband and father just by your sharing this with us.........I can see those tears falling and not ceasing poet........your love for each other lasted a lifetime and perhaps will continue on into eternity........A Christmas Tale; such a lovely title for such a lovely poem. Thank you for posting and sharing with us. Perhaps you will find many other wonderful memories woth sharing in poetic form. Merry Christmas to you and yours, God Bless, Claire
