Shaking Hands

February is the month of love How strange is it I wonder to be thinking about my father I suppose it’s the blessing/curse of being a guy The comforting discomfort of knowing he’s always there and then there’s Johnny Cash there’s something there too I picture them shaking hands

Hi Kenneth...this is such a melancholy piece of poetry. I've lost both my parents and my husband and I must be able to imagine they are somewhere...heaven, perhaps. I have a solid faith but I do sometimes wonder where we really go after death. It is a nice image that your father is shaking hands with Johnny Cash...there is a certain peace in that thought. You have said everything you wanted to say in this terse piece..and done it very poetically. I often get the sense that my husband is very close to me and it happens when I am not even thinking about him. "The comforting discomfort of knowing he's always there" is a wonderful line and I know exactly what you mean! Well done. cheers...Marilyn

Ken, I have read this numerous times and found it most enjoyable with each reading. I've also tried to post and though I'd posted a crit for you but alas, we see they just haven't posted so I'm trying once again...keep your fingers crossed...LOL This is a wonderful tribute to your father, he must have been an exceptional man to remain in your mind and heart and it is alright to feel as you do, I know it just isn't macho for guys.. I love your discomfiture at thinking of your Dad at Valentines... he must have given you something very special to be blessed with having you think of him.. We could all take a lesson from that, and if he's shaking hands with Mr. Cash-- good for him, there is comfort in this scene that you've laid out. Kudos on a phenomenal write full of love, wit and wonder. Best always, Lora

LOL delightful! I enjoyed this read very much, Kenneth. The comforting discomfort.. a fresh thought! and then there’s Johnny Cash....I don't know if there is relevance between your father and Johnny, but I love the twist and the release of laughter. A great read.

Good morning Ken.......very nice read for this one. Dad's are always supposed to be there from the moment we take our first breath.....unfortunately some have to leave way before their journey in life has even begun. February is indeed set aside to reflect love and the store windows are filled with red and pink hearts, stuffed animals, candy of all sorts and I am sure the florists await the deliveries already placed for the 14th. My mind turns to my dad....Lord I so loved that man.......He brought me to school in the morning and within ten minutes he too was with Johnny Cash......though back then I do not think Johnny was there yet....My dad passed away on February 12, 1963 and being so close to Valentines Day and knowing how he and mom loved each other so much I had already mailed their card........I paced back and forth for the mailman that day hoping to get the card back and not hurt mom any more then she already was. Both days are quickly approaching and now mom is with dad in God's Heavenly Garden so indeed my love shall flow to them in bunches, knowing they love me still........we never lose that feeling of having them close to us though and that my friend is a very good thing. The entire piece read very well and you know I am not a good one on giving advice or pointing out flaws........I so appreciate your post and the memories that came flooding forth with it. Take care, have a good Valentines Day and God Bless, Claire
