The Moods of the Sea

O sea, O sea, O bright summer sea, The dip of your waves seems to beckon to me.    How gladly I fly to your cooling embrace,    Feel the breath of your soft breezes fanning my            face, And bound o’er your waves in my boat light and           free ! O sea, O sea, O calm waveless sea, Reflecting the outline of headland and tree,    Stirred by no ripple of breeze as you lie    In portentous repose,  â€˜neath the blue of the sky, Are your thoughts boiling ill for my boat and for            me? O sea, O sea, O wild, boisterous sea ! Flinging your spray to the heavens in glee;     O why do you waken thus rudely from sleep    To frighten stout hearts with your cries, loud and            deep, As you toss, madly toss, both my frail boat and me? Yet I love you, old friend, whate’er your mood be; I love your bright waves gently beck’ning to me,    I love you, as silent, you sleep â€˜neath the sky,    Or when tossing your spray in mad gleefulness]         high ! Yes, I love you, I love you, whate’re your mood be. So the I salute thee O deep, restless sea, And bow to thy greatness-thou profound mystery !    Thy salt breath I love, in the freedom rejoice,    I turn from earth’s beauty to make thee my choice, And bound o’er they waves as a bird that is free ! by Myron Oakman Patton

Additional Notes:
As it turns out my Great-Grandfather was an artist as well as poet. We found several oil paintings while going through my Mom's house. I have one hanging in my upstairs hallway now.

You have given the reader in this first stanza that is smooth yet well rhymed a feeling of entering the sea upon your boat. Freedom is felt for that is the sense you generate within my mind. In the second stanza you again create a feeling this time of peace yet unwanted for the unknown behind it raise the eyebrows. You give me the sense of tranquility yet put me on guard. Now the storm raises it head making the body and foundation look for support to whether it through in the third stanza showing the different ways of venturing into the sea. Yes no matter what the condition it challenges the mind making it look for more of the same feelings for the sea does beacon the individual. Finally you show respect and think about what other wonders the sea will bestow on the adventurers sole. Life can also be a sea of wonders but that is only my thought not what this poem was all about. At least I think you really only wanted to show the sea in this true? Thanks for sharing a well formed and rythemetic poem given the reader the feeling of sailing into the arms of the sea. Thomas

Thanks for posting this one of the sea; I love the sea as well and the images created by the work of your great grandfather brings it all to life.........rough, calm, or in between there is magic in the sea, my husband served in the Coast Guard and was on the seas for four years........amazing were his travels, his adventures, his personal fears and the beauty of the home away from home. Good word flow which this reader appreciates so much. Thanks again for sharing and I can just imagine the beauty created with his hands as well........God Bless, Claire

Hi Ken....what wonderful treausers you have of your great-grandfather. He was multi-talented and I do hope you will publish his work. He was an amazing poet and this particular poem is a fine example of his talented pen. It is very professional and the rhyme is just outstanding.
