A Toast

I went to the Bridge of Tears today A place of sanctuary,a place of peace Had things to talk about ,things to say You can no longer hear my words  My thoughts will have to please So many things have happened,so much has changed We were in our own little world when we walked in the rain We talked of our journeys, and how to grow The joys, the laughs, the tears And the pain you will never know So here I am at the Bridge of Tears again This time with no direction, with no being I raise my glass and drink a toast to you A toast of tears,of sorrows, and joys A toast of things that were, and are to be A toast to us forever and always Farewell to you,my heart,my love Farewell to the Bridge of Tears May I never pass this way again

Michael, This is such a heart felt poignant poem, it brought tears to my eyes. I could feel your loss, your anquish and your coming to terms yet reluctant to totally let go, and I understand. You have conveyed such deep sentiments that it brought this reader to the point of saying "if only I could help you heal" but alas that is a journey that only you can take. My thoughts and prayers will remain with you. Thank you for shareing this emotionally well penned poem with us. I can find no nits nor would I when this is on such a personal level. God Bless. Lora

An interesting sentiment. I like how you juxtapose the original connotations of the bridge with those that occured after the growth of experience. The emotion of the poem is it's highlight, as is the rhythm. I enjoyed the last line, "May I never pass this way again". It felt so haunted, and it capped off your poem nicely.

A Toast.....very fitting title....words that flow and bring forth images along with emotions that are meant to be felt......saying goodbye is never easy and with such a deep loss it may be more so. The opening stanza and the thought of a Bridge of Tears certainly stirs the emotions......life, love, hope and dreams, plans made together to last a lifetime and then........a deep farewell.........I am certain this was most difficult to write and I am also certain others will associate with it all. Thanks, take good care, God Bless, Claire

"Bridge of Tears", whether the place where you took happiness with a loved one or last parted with them (the grave) certainly can bring to bear upon memory unmerciful rawness. Though resigned to any passing, even that of a broken bond, remorseful yearnings may linger. Finality becomes an ultimate unforgiving. It is the irony that "merciful memory", losing in intensity becomes a form of growth. "May I never pass this way again" acknowledges this. The parting tribute of a "toast" thus comes to represent both last farewell and the growth to be placed more whole on finding your new path and resolve to "...never pass this way again." Have your new day in health and good fortune where you do far more honor to memory than to languish in its darker side. A complicated issue well and sensitively dealt with...and poetically. My regards, JCH
