Five Feet Away

Sitting at a table, bright lights in my face, The basketball players on the floor set a furious pace. Soon my goal becomes simple but repetitive, The player scores, look down at the roster, announce the name. People wonder how I stay in the game. One time somebody called me the ‘Mighty Mike Master’ Great, but when I first started I believed I was primed for disaster Announcing basketball and volleyball games is not always easy, but its hecka fun After doing three straight games though, the whole concept can sound rather dumb. Despite enjoying what I do, I yearn for more As another basketball player goes in for a score. I sometimes reflect with a twinge of sadness What it would be like to step on to the floor, and into the madness I don’t think about it often for I would go insane I sometimes dream about being with a team over which I would reign.  Despite the fact that it may seem stupid, I will always dream For life lacks uniqueness without dreams; it is without a common theme Why bother with dreams, after all you’ll never play? Maybe, probably, but you never know some day At the same though, I don’t give up hope For then, my life will be as valuable as soap-on-a rope. In the end, I am happy with my life. And glad that it is largely without strife. Still though, I wish for a better day, One that could sweep all my troubles away The name of this poem is Five Feet Away; it is that for a reason One that can fit any season The following is my very own quote One that I’ve found keeps me emotionally afloat. “Five feet is one small step for mankind but one big step for me.” Until I cross that great divide I’ll use my microphone to get my points across And hope that all my efforts are not at a loss.

Additional Notes:
This poem deals with three big things in my life: public address announcing, high school sports, and my disability. I strongly encourage all readers to look at my profile, because it goes into my disability with a little more depth, and will make this poem easier to understand.
