The Only Child

At times, in the dark pulsating sun of my childhood I wish I had a brother with the same dark, almond eyes glistening like blades and chestnut hair rippling We would have the same genes and decent minds We would drag peacock tails to sweep the dust of our lives away Myths will come to those around us like butterflies hatching beautiful and voracious Trouble would be like our shadow tied to both heels You missed the acid tongue of mother and I was the only one to tend to her for years and years before she died Her criticisms left me raw so I dumped my grief into old fluorescent dustbins  and all preserved anger simply died to gray dust How much I needed you then but sadly my mirror reflects one image…mine and never ours

Hi Cheyenne, Is that the grief of being an only child? I’m sorry to hear that. You know, we are 10 in the family and the joy of being a big family is no compare. It led me to write a poem “Big Family Photo” which I submitted before. I am not making you envious but just want to share a little about me. You should not feel bad at all. Being an only child is even a gift as all the love and attention of your parents are all yours. Anyway, your use of splendid imageries excites me and makes me long for your next submission. Regards, Jordan
