The Deceiver

hearken not to the small voice beyond the garden wall for the smoldering one is not always arrayed as himself he does not have the odor of brimstone as you believed but an essence sweet to the senses only to turn sour as the aroma rises do not look for wailing and grotesque figures more likely, a well arrayed visitor which one might, at first sight,  count it a privilege to be honored by the sweet taste of the wine is gone after he has sat at your table and it becomes as bitterweed in your mouth beauty often deceives the eye but the heart looks beneath the surface one should be careful of the laddered thorns beneath the soft petaled rose they have a deceptive sharpness that can draw blood be sure what flowers are your delight  in the garden of life or you may pick the sweet, fragrant lilies for your own death bed © 1976   Donna Friedrichs
