End of Summer

In the summertime, Miss Lily always wore white. When there were no clouds, she carried a parasol not because it might rain, but because the sun rained twinkling drops on her face and hands. She played croquet with the gentlemen on the great lawns of the seashore as birds landed on the wickets, tossing her a glance. She would throw back her head and laugh as the ball glanced off the wire.  As time passed, Miss Lily still wore white, but the birds no longer landed and she no longer laughed and the ball went straight through the wicket without a glance.
