What Was That? I had a thought, but left the room It didn’t follow to the hall And when I reached the living room It wasn’t there at all I turned back toward the bedroom And caught a furtive move away I stepped in its direction But it didn’t want to stay The chase was on and round about I charged from room to room At times I almost caught it Or hit it with the broom No matter where I went No matter what I thought It only left me glimpses Of matters I forgot I don’t believe I need this Or deserve this petulance What thoughts reside to go forth Should be there moments hence I slumped upon the sofa So troubled and bereft But found my thought beneath me ...Grabbed my car keys and I left. |
Additional Notes:
An elegy to forgetfulness or a paean to the heroism of remembering (especially as we get older). :)
