Once So Vain

Christmas of '37 comes to mind with ease. Excitement filled the air,  mingling with freshly cut pine, and ripe zesty oranges. Families eagerly bustled around us  as young ones were heard putting in their tall orders. I could only dream to be so happy one day. Then, for a fleeting moment, time seemed to cease in my world. For this is the first time I saw you. With a pallet so bright and eyes so vivid,  you left me yearning to forstall you. We became acquainted and I so boldly took you into my home. How grand you look in the parlor. I can recall minutes a day spent, marveling over your being. Now so quickly spent has been forty years. When I see your eyes today,  I see our pallets have faded to greyish hues,  and our eyes not so vivid as once were. Then without warning a great transformation allowed me to view the world with amplification. For this is when I found my new love. Now, on that rare occasion when I gaze around my mirror image, I see not me, but behind me, my dream. My family, is now my reality. That, my "once so vain" friend, will continue my heart young forever.
