The Recluse

Surrounded by faces I am alone in my own world Where darkness and light intermingle  Creating whirlwinds and storms  Weaving patterns in my mind Putting into form everything I cannot express Until an uneasy calm finally settles upon meā€¦for a time. I force smiles and polite words Ignoring the twitching around my eyes and the slight tremble of my hands. Voices and inquiring eyes stare at me With hostility or wonderment, occasionally a warm smile. Feeling like a caged animal, I long to escape Back into the undemanding solitude of the night Where I can simply be Without the pressures of conversation Or the gnawing anxiety strangers bring. And I wonder why I am so afraid when what I must face alone is so much more dangerous.
