From A Distance

When I was 10...you were only 1... A baby in diapers, with red curls,  and a grin so...cute...you toddled into your big sister's heart, but... you were still a little pest! When I was 20...you were 10... Although we were separated by miles, I watched all your accomplishments  in school and sports, through snapshots and yearly visits; as you grew...I was  proud of the budding boy I saw. When I was 30...you were 20... The 'big sister' in me wanted to protect  and shield you from the deep loneliness  that I saw hiding in your young eyes, but I knew you had to learn to stand  alone...to become a strong man. When I was 40...you were 30... I wondered when...the right lady for you  would wander into your life, to captivate your heart with her charms, but I had to wait for her to arrive...at a distance. Now that I am 50+...you are 40+... Some days I still wonder...what God  has planned for us to fulfil our destiny. I know, He watches us...from 'His' distance, sending His angels to closely guard us, as His plan unfolds in our lives by faith. Dear brother, I've watched your life unfold, from a distance...as you became a man. I am so proud of who you have become,  and I am grateful that this year I am able  to share your life...up close and personal.

Additional Notes:
This is a poem I wrote for my brother's birthday. Because of divorce and circumstances beyond our control, we were raised in different families; and only saw each other for special occasions and for a week in the summer now and again. About a year ago he bought a business less than 100 miles from where I live. Now we can spend weekends and holidays together for the first time in 40 years! The pauses...are placed in this piece to give the feeling of pausing...to remember, as well as well as give the feeling of the distance I have felt between us.
